CCC-TRIO Symposium 2025

Translational Research In Oncology

CCC-TRIO 2025: Two days of exchange, networking and translational collaboration in cancer research

More than 450 participants, 135 posters, 2 CCC Lifetime Achievement Awards and top keynotes and plenty of exchange: for two days, translational cancer research was the focus of the CCC-TRIO Symposium 2025 of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna of MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital. Over 450 participants came together at MedUni Vienna's Lecture Center on 12 and 13 June to discuss the latest scientific developments, present young researchers and initiate new collaborations.

The topics covered ranged from immuno-oncology and cancer epidemiology, artificial intelligence and machine learning to new therapeutic targets and biomarkers. The keynotes by renowned scientists Florian Greten, Douglas Hanahan, Catherine Alix-Panabières, Tjalling Bosse, Anna Fagotti, Freddie Bray, Péter Hegyi and Thomas Powles provided visionary impetus - both in terms of scientific concepts and clinical applications. At the same time, the symposium - with the participation of the Medical Universities of Graz and Innsbruck - offered plenty of space for young cancer researchers, personal encounters and interdisciplinary cooperation. "We need formats like CCC-TRIO to learn from each other - basic research from the clinic, and vice versa. This is the only way to create real translation," says CCC Director Shahrokh F. Shariat.

Workshops, poster walks & panels: space for exchange
Three interactive workshops of the Young CCC Board offered practical input on biobanks, organoids and patients as a link between research and industry. In addition, experts from science, politics and public health discussed the future of cancer strategy in Austria - with a clear goal: better translation, stronger networking, faster implementation.

Lifetime Achievement Awards for HPV research
A festive highlight was the presentation of the CCC Lifetime Achievement Awards 2025. Professor Reinhard Kirnbauer (Department of Dermatology, emeritus) and Professor Elmar Joura (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) were honored for their pioneering contributions to translational cancer research - in particular for the development and global implementation of the HPV vaccine, which has prevented hundreds of thousands of cancer cases worldwide. “With Reinhard Kirnbauer and Elmar Joura, we are honoring two scientists and physicians who have conducted excellent translational research for the benefit of mankind and have thus written medical history,” explains Shahrokh Shariat, Head of the CCC Vienna. "Thanks to their work, it is now possible to prevent six different types of cancer with a vaccine - including cervical, vulvar, anal and penile cancers as well as throat cancer. This is a milestone in cancer medicine."
